Amalfi Coast No Stress Howto
Amalfi Coast No Stress Howto
How Best To Programme And Enjoy A Vacation (Cutting Out The Stress) On The Amalfi Coast.
1) Travel light (no trunks - except swimming - no neckties and no high heel shoes). The Amalfi Coast is a land which is best expressed in a vertical sense. It is a land, therefore, that climbs up the mountains from the sea by narrow streets, paths and stairways that twist and urn among the houses. "Go up" or "Go down" are the directions most frequently employed for those who want to visit the area and there is not a house on the Coast that hasn't some stairs, either inside or outside, to climb.
A great American writer once wrote that it is possible, even on the Amalfi Coast, to dress in evening wear or in an immaculate white suit and tie, hat, dress shoes or high heel shoes. But, you will have to be ready to arrive at the party - wherever it is – in a pitiful state and... with swollen feet! So if you really want to enjoy the party on the Amalfi Coast, favour practical clothes, light luggage and, above all, low-heeled, comfortable shoes. The beaches are stoney and there are rocks everywhere. Slip some waterproof shoes for swimming and if you prefer mountaineering, bring hiking boots. What about fashion? What about glamour? Well, two great icons of worldly elegance - Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Ines de la Freinessage - danced barefoot and walked in typical locally produced sandels while vacationing here. Follow their lead and rediscover the pleasure of what it means to feel beautiful and seductive 'au naturale'...
2) Leave your car at home (or throw away the keys after you've parked it). The Amalfi Coast is among the most sought after locations in the world for shooting automobile advertisements.
Notwithstanding the stupendous scenery, the legendary SS163 is, in fact, a magnificent road for showing off the skill of the driver or the power of the engine.
Our local bus drivers are applauded every day by the tourists delighted with the dexterity they show by executing complicated driving manoeuvres or getting out of breathtaking traffic jams - especially in the summer. The reason? It's simple: driving along the Amalfi Coast is not at all easy. The roads, especially for those who are used to driving on wide new roads, could cause a panic attack. Most of the state road is dotted with panoramic curves of spectacular beauty, that are followed by sheer drops and abysses that can cause a certain effect on the nerves and, of course, on fragile stomachs if you suffer from sea sickness or motion sickness. In any case, public transportation, rental cars, boats and long relaxing walks in nature or in the centre of town which is almost always closed to traffic are highly recommended. This way you will also avoid the problem of finding a parking space (which is both difficult to find and quite expensive).
3) Organize your activities with care. There is really a lot to do on the Amalfi Coast and it is difficult to know where to start. You are, after all, just a few kilometers or sea miles from really mythological places.
How could you not visit Capri, a short boat away? And Positano? And Sorrento? And could you possibly miss seeing Ercolano or Pompei, Paestum or Vesuvio? On the other hand, you'll have a comfortable house, perhaps with a swimming pool, the beach just a short walk away, the freshest fish just bought, a huge basket of fruit and vegetables given by your neighbor and a sun and a splendid sea that are inviting you to enjoy an equally magnificent inactivity. What to do when the choices are so pleasantly conflicting? In Italy they say, 'follow your heart' and let it be so, at least while you are on holiday. Plan - let us say - an excursion in the mountain but don't be too surprised if you find yourself instead in the sea helping some fisherman bring in his nets. What is important is that you are in harmony with yourself. There is just one thing that we recommend that you plan with great care and that is your arrival and your departure. Airports, train and bus stations and ports are not really close by and independently from the actual distance, can be difficult to reach, especially in the summer. If you are travelling by public transit there may be several connections to make with schedules that are not always guaranteed and personnel who are not necessarily available. Please don't hesitate to contact us for any information you may need. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to arrive here. Help us to do so by asking our help.
4)
Remember that time and space are very relative concepts. Don't expect Anglo Saxon or Swiss punctuality as far as public transit or delivery of goods are concerned. Schedules are dependent on traffic, that - especially in the summer - can delay the passage of cars, buses and boats. In the Winter the problem can be the opposite. The road is free of traffic and public transportation often arrives ahead of schedule. In any case, you will soon discover that the Amalfi Coast has its schedules and its high seasons, and as you are used to do everywhere else, you will learn to organize your life in such a way as to avoid finding yourself blocked in a crowd of tourists, in a queue or piled up one on top of each other in traffic. This will be especially important if you intend to dedicate a part of your holiday to excursions and cultural visits in archaeological sites. For this, early morning or off season is best. We can guarantee that archaeological sites, such as Pompei and Ercolano really should not be missed. But, don't imagine that we are talking about a couple of columns and some nice old vases conserved in a beautiful air conditioned museum.
We are talking about scouring and immersing yourself in real and proper ancient cities, preserved from the past, which offer marvelous examples of buildings, houses, temples and amphitheatres which are absolutely authentic and not artificially created for the tourist. This involves walking on stone-paved streets, like a Roman or Greek of old, for quite some time under the hot sun. And, don't even hope for a chariot! Are you sure that you want to do this in August, at two or three o'clock in the afternoon? And are you sure that the ten kilometres between Amalfi and Ravello are the same as the ten kilometres you would travel in Toronto, New York or London? Try to arrive on time for a concert in Ravello in the summer. Then, we can talk about this again.
During the summer, however, don't worry about the business hours of restaurants, bars, night clubs, shopping and other amenities. We are equipped to welcome and entertain you 24 hours a day. If, instead, you come to visit in the winter, we recommend you quickly befriend a local. Amalfi Coast Accommodation partners Tony or Sandra, for example. If you'd rather cook, organize and enjoy a nice dinner, listen to music , read a good book or watch a good film, the homes that we offer will make this experience a true pleasure and your holiday a marvelous break. Our winter climate is mild, nature is marvellous, the town is slow reserved, hardly ever busy and quiet. Not your usual winter, is it?
5) Don't count calories (and enjoy the advantages of the Mediterranean diet)
. If the locals seem slim and in shape to you, we owe it all to the fact that nature and the local landscape offers us a natural calorie burner. We swim, we row, we dive, we trek, we climb and we go up and down stairs constantly. We breathe clean air, we enjoy constant sea breezes, and, above all, we luxuriate in this fantastic, free aroma therapy. The Mediterranean scrub, our gardens, our citrus groves and the spontaneous plant life of our coast offer magnificent scents and tastes which you will find - together with fresh fish - at the basis of our cuisine.
A simple but very, very tasty cuisine based on dishes that are characterized by high nutritional value and low fat content. Certainly, you can get carried away with our wines-that is the summer we mix with fresh peaches,-our home-made liqueurs, and above all, our “gelati”, our granitas and our many traditional sweets. But, don't worry... a short walk and you'll burn it all off... you decide how much and how... dance, swim, dive, run or do aerobics, acrobatics, stretching, erotics or artistics... what does it matter? It is impossible NOT to move here; and as far as your health is concerned, that's a real plus.
6) Come and travel accompanied by who you love and really know. The Amalfi Coast is a land that, even morphologically, compels one to closeness and intimacy. The streets are narrow, living spaces are literally wrenched from the rock and attached one to another.
It can seem cramped for those used to the flat, level life of apartments and city streets. It isn't by chance that we are included among the most romantic places in the world. In fact, it's impossible to get away, to not be touched, to not hold hands, or not let yourself languish in this atmosphere that is perfect for all the lovers of the world. Towns like Ravello, Positano and Sorrento are host to stratospheric numbers of weddings because many are the couples - some of them famous - who fell in, rediscovered ,or took refuge from, love here. And who, consequently, choose to get married here in the land of love and in this fantastic honeymoon setting Thus, a solitary traveller here might soon find himself attached to the telephone calling a great or lost love to join him. Or, as another option, he may find himself engaged in rites of seduction or unexpected courtship. Prepare yourself and protect yourself for a reawakening of the senses that can easily happen here. Good natives that we are, we warn you of the possible dangers. As in every self-respecting love story there is some obstacle to overcome. But, to paraphrase Beppe Severgnini, 'a partner who still smiles at you after a trip in a boat in rough seas, or a bus trip that comes up from the beach and, a partner who doesn't fall asleep after an excursion in town and still looks at you tenderly after your third plate of spaghetti, you can be sure, will be wherever and forever a good companion.
7) Never dwell on appearances (and don't expect that appearances count a great deal here...) Maybe you don't know it, but we are used to living together with celebrities here. Celebrities who live among us and love us precisely because we natives take little account of them. And we know, we know perfectly well, that you could easily find yourself next to the umbrella of a film industry tycoon or a finance magnate. It may also be that the gentleman who offers to carry your groceries is a multimillionaire and the daughter of the farmer nearby is a close friend of the daughter of a German or Austrian Cabinet Minister. Therefore, never pass sentence on appearances that on the Amalfi Coast are unavoidably simple, discrete, easy-going and relaxing for everyone. Be polite, courteous, discrete and friendly with everyone and everyone will be friendly, polite, courteous and available with you. Above all, learn to live together with a welcoming culture where it doesn't matter to anyone what you do or what you possess. The only thing that matters to us is what you are.
8) Bring your music, your novel and your favourite guide book with you (but don't be surprised if you don't use them at all) As much as it is publicized, the Amalfi Coast manages to surprise even us who were born here or live here. Things here are hard to grasp sometimes and every day there is something new to discover, an angle or a perspective of the landscape, for example. But also sunrises, sunsets, combinations of light that leave you watching like an idiot. The very cultural manifestations, especially the most beautiful ones, follow rhythms or dates in strict contact with natural phenomena. At Ravello, for example, there are magnificent classical music concerts tied to the full moons of summer. “La Luminaria di S.Domenico” waits for darkness before illuminating the town of Praiano with millions of lights.
One goes fishing scanning the tides, phases of the moon or flights of birds. Restaurant menus are based on the day's catch or on the seasonal vegetables, sweets on a calendar - invisible and precise - which depends on traditional feast days, availability of the ingredients and on the quality of the harvest. We live outside most of the time and most things happen when nature permits. How can you give an exact hour, a precise location, or a fast rule in a land where nature, and only nature, is the director? At best, here, one can decide the sound track, the scenario or the moment when to give or not your own personal 'cut'. But don't be surprised if -from Led Zeppelin addict— you find yourself dancing cheek-to-cheek to a languid Neapolitan melody. Or if all the words you have read, all the poems that you know aren't sufficient to verbalize what you experience when you look out over any point of the “Sentiero degli Dei”. An old song says it best, ”You say it best when you don't speak at all”.
9) Don't be disheartened by complications (and always count on some help from friends) We often hear that ours is not an easy territory or a vacation spot that is suited to a certain type of person. We are ready to show you that this is not so. Be you rich or poor, young or old, a sportsman or wimp, sick or well, single or with a dog and ten kids in tow, we are ready and willing to welcome you, show you around and help you to get the piece of paradise that you deserve. In order to do so we need two things: your capacity to trust us and your availability to talk freely to us beforehand about your needs and personal predicaments This way, we will be able to tell you if the property you have chosen is suitable for you, suggest alternatives, or offer solutions, advice, and personalized references. This way you won't find us unprepared to welcome and show you our hospitality.
10) Prepare yourself to be our guest, not our client. Amalfi Coast Accommodation does not live on tourism. It is a means of promotion whose scope is to share our land, our table, knowledge and know-how with everyone who honours us with a visit. Your stay with us will be better the more you know to act as our guest and friend, rather than client or consumer. Consider us and treat us as friends at your disposition. Wherever, however, and anywhere you may be.
