Palazzo S. Croce - Description

Not just a villa nor just one of the most beautiful villas in Italy, Palazzo Santa Croce is - above all - a page from history and an authentic witness to the highest and most cultured spirit of the Amalfi Coast. Among the most magnificent historical residences of the region, Palazzo Santa Croce was constructed - at the end of 1600 - to house a rich merchant family. The merchants from the prosperous little city of Positano, easily reached the rich ports of the East and other thriving Mediterranean civilizations, bringing back art, merchandise and manufactured goods that beautify large parts of the local architecture. Even today, Positano enjoys this ancient commercial spirit and trades with the Orient, and far away business partners that have their roots in the rich mercantile past of the city. Especially between the end of 1600 and 1777, Positano traded with and was closely tied to Eastern civilizations and the entire Mediterranean culture. Strategic port and important commercial intersection, what today seems a little tourist village, was for a long period a flourishing mercantile commercial city, able to trade - over the entire national territory - precious goods and raw materials of the highest quality. Raw materials and magnificent hand made goods that are found and abound – in all their splendour - in this magnificent Baroque period palazzo. The palace was built near the end of 1600 to celebrate the power and wealth of its inhabitants and, to underline their social status, was placed in a position of sheer dominance on the highest point of the hill - in a splendid setting of hanging gardens - overlooking the bay and the ancient port of the city. The panorama from the property is unforgettable and impossible to describe. The Palazzo Santa Croce, was embellished with everything that was precious, exotic and rare that prosperous maritime commerce could afford at the time. Constructed on three levels, the Palazzo is an authentic jewel box of decorative elements and architectural details of great value, that, if in part relate to the Baroque tradition and the magnificent villas of the Vesuvian area, they also hint of the oriental bazaar, giving the villa the solitary and mysterious grace of great residences of the Mediterranean area. The magnificent portico on the ground floor welcomes the visitors and surrounds them with a unique quiet and charm. It is arranged around an ancient well skillfully adorned with wrought iron and magnificently surrounded by plaster benches, vases, lanterns and hand made goods in ceramic and clay that allude to the best of Neopolitan art. This is but the first impact with the sumptuous beauty of the residence. The main floor expounds the magnificence of the Baroque era. The whole first floor is adorned with richly-painted ceilings, stucco-framed fixtures and sumptuous windows overlooking the green of the landscape and the blue of the sea and offers a unique opportunity to feel carried back to the 17th century. It is difficult to describe the magnificence of the noble floor where still today it is possible to wake up like a 17th century nobleman or a member of a royal family. With the decline of the mercantile period and the ferocious Saracen invasions in 1777, the archives of the palace were lost, and after centuries of neglect, it was brought back to life and 'rediscovered' - at the beginning of the 1900s - by foreign aristocrats who began to show up on the Coast and who, in the first years of the century, contributed to render it 'Divine'. In 1920, running from the antisemitic political climate in Germany, Eduard Ghillaushen, a well-known German philosopher and brilliant exponent of the Bauhaus school, and Edvige Reidel, lover of classical music and passionate astrologer, along with 34 refugee families, took sanctuary in Palazzo Santa Croce. There, besides enjoying the protection and support of the local population, the two intellectuals found a chosen homeland that they lived in and made noble until they died many years later. With them, Palazzo Santa Croce acquired and conserved the spirit of the ideal setting for creative indolence, rest, protection and shelter for anyone who chose to live in the profound beauty of a location that, as well as conserving the splendour of ancient Positano, reveals the great capacity of this magnificent town to welcome and play host to the world. Hospitality and memories that the present owners of the property - last heirs to the remarkable commercial and entrepreneurial tradition of Positano have decided to honour, transforming the home and, after a major restyling, want to welcome guests and travellers looking for the best, and only the best, of Positano hospitality. It is an attempt to offer to the traveller the same marvels that in the past led many aristocrats to find in Positano the homeland and the refuge that all of us – fleeing from the vulgarity and injustice of these times - dream to find. There is very little to add to the magnificence of the place, to the extraordinary beauty of the geographical location, to the allure that the house has acquired over time and emanates today... just... every comfort and convenience of the modern era - starting with the swimming pool and private spa that are as luxurious as can be found in many of the 5 star luxury hotels that stand out along the Amalfi Coast. The distinct advantage here is that you won't feel like a guest at a hotel. Here, you become the lord and sovereign of a private piece of earthly paradise. After your stay here you will not want to be exiled ever again. Palazzo Santa Croce in Positano, the best italian villa proposed for You by Amalfi Coast Accommodation.
